Sow and Reap

2 Corinthians 9:6, “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.”

In farming, there is the time of sowing (planting) and the time of reaping (harvest).  When it comes to crops, they have to be put in the ground, given time to grow and then once mature, they are harvested.  If not enough seed is put in the ground or planted with rows far apart, the harvest will be light.  If lots of seed is put in the ground and planted in narrower rows, the harvest will be plentiful.  We must be careful when we sow and reap.

He who sows sparingly.  Like the farming analogy, what we put into our life, we will get out of it.  What we put into our walk with Christ, we will get out of it.  If we do not spend time reading the Bible, we will not gain its knowledge.  If we do not pray, we will not hear what God wants to tell us.  If we do not spend time with other Christ followers, we will not be strengthened in unity.  If we sparingly walk in faith, we are not walking much with God.

Will reap sparingly.  If we are not willing to put in the work to learn and hear God’s Word, your walk will be affected.  In our walk with Christ, we should always be striving to learn all that we can.  We should want to spend more time with God.  There are so many people who attend church for one day a week, one hour that day.  They think this is ok.  I am not here to judge but there are so many hours in a week (168 hours each week).  That is .6% of the week given to God.  There is so much more time that should be given to God.  Given in prayer.  Given in reading the Bible.  We will not get much back from God if we only give a little.

He who sows bountifully.  If we are willing to put all we can into our relationship with God, our relationship will be strong.  God is our Father.  A Father who is there and cares for us.  Because He is our Father, we are His sons and daughters.  That means that we are children of God and we are entitled to all that God the Father has.  God has the world, universe and everything in it.  Following God means eternal life, the greatest gift we can ever receive.

Will reap bountifully.  When we follow God, when we read our Bible, when we pray, we will begin to see things change in our lives.  Maybe not right away but it will happen.  The closer you get to God, the closer God comes to You.  The way to reap bountifully is to spend as much time with God as we can.  When we do this, we show our love for the Father in Heaven, who has given us so much.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for all that You have done and continue to do in our lives.  We need You so much, Lord.  Please forgive us for not giving You the amount of time that You are so worthy of having.  We allow ourselves to get caught up in life and forget that You are life, eternal life.  I pray that we learn to appropriate our time better and give more time to You in prayer, reading Your Word and spending time with You.

In Your name we pray,

Amen
