Matthew 1:18-25, “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.”
Verse 20: But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
But while he thought about these things. With all that was going on, Joseph had a lot on his mind. His mind must have been racing with everything regarding Mary. He had to make sure that He was not going to get killed or his wife. He also had to make sure that his unborn child would have two parents and would be safe.
Behold. As Joseph was thinking, something else comes up to add to the already loaded plate that Joseph. Joseph was already overloaded with all that was happening. He was about to have a guest come to see him.
An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. Joseph was thinking so much that he most likely wore himself out to the point of sleep. He also could have been put to sleep by God as part of the plan. Regardless, Joseph was dreaming about an angel that from sent from God. This angel was sent to give him news.
Saying, Joseph, son of David. The angel address Joseph by his name but then as a son of David. As explained previously in the chapter, Joseph is in the lineage of David. This means that Jesus is also of the lineage of David. This line is a royal line as David was a very prominent king in the Old Testament times.
Do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife. The angel had a specific message for Joseph to alleviate any worries he had about the situation. The angel told him to marry Mary. No one else had been with her. The baby was not another man’s. The angel was giving a message from God not to worry. God had a plan and Joseph merely had to trust in what God was doing. It would all make sense soon but for now, it would require a lot of faith.
For that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. The baby that was in Mary was not from a human man but from God. The Holy Spirit was in charge of putting that baby inside of Mary for her and Joseph to raise to adulthood. This was a huge charge put on them as not only were they raising a son but God’s Son. God’s only Son. Mary was a pure vessel in which to carry the Son of God into this world. What an honor bestowed to Mary. She was responsible for the birth of the Savior of the world.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for what You do for us. When we need You, You comfort us. You hear us why we cry out to You. Joseph needed You and You sent an angel. When we need You, we have the Holy Spirit to guide us. We love You and need You. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus. He is truly the Savior of the world.
