The Birth of the Savior (Part 4 of 7)

Matthew 1:18-25, “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.”

Verse 21: And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.

And she will bring forth a Son.  The angel continued with the speech to Joseph.  The angel let Joseph know that not only was he having a baby but He was having a Son.  This was a guarantee that Joseph would have a baby and that he and his wife would be safe.  Joseph would know that God would protect him in this seemingly dire situation.

And you shall call His name Jesus.  Joseph and Mary did not have the dilemma that so may parents have.  There was a name already chosen for their baby.  his name was to be Jesus.  Jesus comes from the Hebrew word Ἰησοῦς Iēsoûs, ee-ay-sooce’; (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites.  Jesus was more than just a regular baby.  He would be more than they even knew at the time.

He will save His people.  Jesus had an important mission when He came to Earth.  He was save the whole world.  He was to be born and then roughly 30 years later, He would die in the most horrific way in order to save everyone that had ever lived, was living and would live in the history of the world.  Jesus came to Earth in the form of man to show us the way to live and to be there to help us with our own lives and wrongs.

From their sins.  We all sin.  It is a fact of life.  We do things that are wrong.  Jesus came to save us from these sins that we commit day in and day out.  We need Jesus because without Him, we are stuck with our sins.  With Jesus, we can cast our sins on Him.  He will take them away and the effect of sin, which is death, is no longer death.  We are given life through the death of Jesus and the removal of our sins.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Jesus.  We need Your Son and You knew that we did.  That is why You sent Him to Earth for us.  I am so sorry that Your Son had to die for my sins, but I thank You that He did that for me.  I thank You that You are an awesome, loving God.  You are owed all the love, honor and praise that we can give You and more.

In Your name we pray,

Amen
