Nothing Without Love

1 Corinthians 13:2, “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”

Love is such a wonderful thing.  It truly is a gift.  God is love and without God, we are nothing.  That would stand to reason then that we are nothing without love.

Though I have the gift of prophecy.  This is a gift that is not seen as much as in Biblical times.  To prophecy is to speak out about the future.  It is not of man’s idea, but of God’s idea.  God gives some of us a sneak peek into what we happen in times to come.  God does this out of love.  Without love, there is prophecy.  It is because God loves us that He wants what is best for us and wants us to know what will happen in His timing.

Understand all mysteries.  There are so many mysteries in this world.  God knows everything and there are things that God lets us know as a glimpse into the unknown.  There are simply things that must remain a mystery.  God is love and will reveal the mysteries at His appointed time.  We will know what we need to know when we need to know it.  This is because God loves us and He will not keep us uninformed on what is going on.  For the times that it seems like God is not answering, that is the time we need to renew our faith and trust in Him ever more.

All knowledge.  There is no way to have all knowledge.  Only God has all knowledge.  On the chance that we could have all knowledge, it would be because of God.  Even if we had all knowledge and lacked love, it would be meaningless.  It would be unfruitful.  Knowledge is good and we should all want to strive to have knowledge but God wants us to have so much more.  Faith, trust and especially love.  God wants us to love as He loves.

Though I have all faith.  Having all the faith in the world would be a great thing.  Any amount of faith is a good thing.  This, in and of itself, is good but it needs love.  Faith without love is not faith at all.  When we have faith, it is in God.  God is love so our faith is firmly rooted in love.  Faith without love is dead.

That I could remove mountains.  Mountains can be removed but only by the power of God.  Moving mountains is good but love is more powerful.  Love can break a hardened heart.  Love can soothe an ache.  Love can heal an illness.  Love is what sent Jesus down to Earth to save us all from sin and give us the way to Heaven to be with God forever.  Power is one thing but without love, it is nothing.

Have not love.  Lacking love in anything that we do is a scary concept.  Love is needed because, as previously stated, God is love.  If we lose love, we lose the aspect of God.  Even in chastisement, God is showing love.  He truly cares for us.  It is impossible for God to not show love because love is the very essence of God.  He is love and love is God.  When we lack love, we are not showing the blessing that God gives us.  God gives us love so that we may show love to others.

I am nothing.  We are nothing without God and His love.  We cannot produce love apart from God.  We are weak without God.  We lack intelligence without God.  We lack faith apart from God.  We are powerless with the love of God in us.  We can attempt many things without God, but in the end, they will be failure.  Futile.  Nothing.  If we want to have structure and mean something in this life, we need God.  The love of God is all that we need.  Glory to God for the love that He shows us daily and especially for the love shown on that day when Jesus died for the world.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for love.  We need Your love to surround us.  We need Your love to invade us.  Help us to never try to do anything apart from You.  We are nothing without You.  Renew our faith in You, Lord.  Renew our strength in You.  Renew our minds toward You and Your love.  We keep our eyes on the prize that is Heaven and ask that we not stray from that gaze.  Let us never lack love and give us the words and actions to impact the world around us.

In Your name we pray,

Amen
