Proverbs 23:9, “Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, For he will despise the wisdom of your words.”
Words are all around us. Even what I am typing are words. They are said. They are thoughts. They float and get thrown around all over the place. Words can be big or small. Complex or simple. Descriptive. Informative. Loving. Hateful. This is the warning. Watch your words.
Do not speak. Words are so important but there are times when no words should be said. Words can sometimes complicate a situation. Sometimes it is best to just swallow your words, especially if they are not going to be beneficial to a conversation. Words last forever so we need to be careful to choose the correct ones. Spoken words may be forgotten, but God never forgets them. Even written words can be erased, but there is always someone, somewhere who has seen them.
In the hearing of a fool. A fool, or a stupid person, hears what he wants to hear. That said, words will fall on his or her ears and not be heard. This is why words will only be effective if the fool is willing to have an open mind. He or she needs to be less stupid and more giving. I mean this in the best way, but words are simply not effective all the time.
He will despise. People will not always like being told the truth. They will hate it actually. That is how words work with a fool sometimes. People will convince themselves of the truth even if the truth actually turns out to be false. We need to be willing to talk to people when they are ready and stop when they are not.
The wisdom of your words. Our words need to be wise and they can only be truly wise when we have God in them. The Holy Spirit can guide our words if we let Him. We need to watch our words that we say so that they are honoring and pleasing God most of all. If people are not willing to listen to the words of God, that will happen. People have been ignoring the words of God for decades and centuries and millennia. If we think they will listen to us, we have to try. We must watch what we say and be a beacon to those around.
Help us to watch what we say to each and every person that we see. We need to make sure that You are the main topic of our thoughts. You are worthy of everything we can give. You are truth and we must be willing to share You with people who may not be willing to listen. It may seem like we are wasting our time but help us to understand that we are not. We ask that You watch over us and help others to hear what we say from You.
In Your name we pray,
