1 Thessalonians 1:5, “For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.”
The Gospel is not just a bunch of words in a book. It is not a bunch of stories to tell at bedtime. There is power to the words that are in the Gospel. The Gospel is alive. It is alive and it is in the form of Jesus Christ. Jesus is truly the embodiment of the Gospel. He is the Word and Power of the Gospel.
Many people, when they hear of the gospel, they think of the first four books of the Bible. They think of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. In these four books are one consistent theme: Jesus. His birth, His life, His ministry, His death, and His resurrection. The Gospel is not only word, but it is all about Jesus and the power that He was and is. There is much power in the Word because it comes from God. Jesus’s life is marked by authority and when He speaks, He speaks as God because He is God. He was all man and is all God.
The other part of God is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was given after Jesus left this Earth in His human form. There is just as much power in the Holy Spirit as there is in Jesus as there is in God the Father. That is the wonder of the Triune Godhead. No one part of God is less than another. Each part is the same and act as One. There is much power in the Holy Spirit as is shown in the lives of Christ followers for thousands of years.
The gospel of the Bible has been preached by many people over the years to include Paul, for whom this text is written by. After his conversion on the Damascus Road, Paul took the gospel to heart and embraced it. He took the gospel and made it his mission to preach it because that is what God called him to do. God calls all of us to show the gospel to the world. By showing the gospel, we show Jesus. He is available to all who are willing to accept Him.
We need the gospel. We need the gospel because the gospel is Jesus. Jesus came to this world to save us. Save us from the death that we deserve. Thanks be to God that we all can have the gift of salvation if only we forsake this life and live for a life that is so much more than this. Eternal life can be ours if we only accept the Son of God. We must accept the Word and Power that is the Gospel, which is all Jesus, Son of God, Savior of the world. What a wonder Savior that we have in Jesus!
Thank You for the Word that You sent to us. You know what we need before we need it. You know us because You created us. You know us because You care to know us. You love us and for that, we owe You all that we are. We need You and we kneel in reverence to all that are. Thank You God for Your Son and Your Spirit that are given to us. We love You with all that we are.
In Your name we pray,
