Ephesians 4:29, “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”
When I point my eyes to social media, I see so much hate being spewed and gossip being slung. I would think that these people are not Christ followers because of their actions, but these are professing Christians. Now before someone starts thinking that I am a being judgmental, I own the speech that I do. I am not perfect. I do not always say the kindest of words. That is no excuse. We need to use good words to build up people, not tear them down.
According to this verse in Ephesians, we should not let corrupt words come out. Corrupt comes from the Greek word σαπρός saprós, sap-ros’; rotten, i.e. worthless (literally or morally):—bad. This means that worthless words should not come out of anyone’s mouth. Worthless words are words that do nothing to help. They are noise. They are clatter. Worthless words are like the refuse of vocabulary.
Good words are necessary for building up people. Encouragement is so helpful and it is also what the world needs more of. More people banding together to help each other instead of picking each apart. So much of the world wants to keep people down and assert dominance. I say that if we all help each other out, we all win in the end. Jesus, in all His preaching, had words to build up others but also had some pointed words. It was not hate, gossip, or rude. It was direct. They were the words that needed to said to those that He came into contact with.
Imparting grace to others is essential to living the Godly life. God did and does so much for us daily and that is grace. He gives us so much and we cannot ever repay Him. We then need to give this grace to others. If we receive some hateful speech, we are not to return hate for hate. We need to show God’s love. We need to end the cycle of hate speech that is plaguing the Internet. So the statuses that are gossip, hate, and are just rude need to stop. The world needs God’s love and God’s love can only be spread through good words.
Help us with our speech. Guide our words to be good and not bad. This is a choice that we have. We need You so that we can know what to say. I pray for those that feel that hateful speech is necessary. I also pray that everyone learns to speak nicely. We need to show Your love to the world. You are the Light and we need to reflect that Light to everyone that we can. We can build others up but we can’t do it with You, Lord.
In Your name we pray,
