Matthew 2:1-2, “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea. Jesus was born to Joseph and Mary in the small town of Bethlehem. Bethlehem was a small town in the area of Judea. This was where the baby was and this is where Joseph and Mary decided to stay.
In the days of Herod the king. When Jesus was born, the Jewish people were in a state of turmoil. They were under the control of Herod the king, who was put in command by the Romans. Rome chose him because of his loyalty to the Caesar. The days that Jesus was born into were stressful and were times that the Jewish people would need someone to help them get out from under Roman rule.
Behold, wise men from the East. The wise men that came were from an unknown location other than “East.” This could have meant somewhere in the Southeast Asia location. They were obviously of some significance to be mentioned among the people who came to visit Jesus.
Came to Jerusalem. The wise men did not go directly to Bethlehem where Jesus and His parents were. They went to the large city of Jerusalem where the prominent people would have been. They would have inquired there to know exactly where to go next. This was not on accident as this was part of God’s plan to have the wise men speak to people who were connected to Herod the king. They had a question and statement that would send fear into the heart of Herod.
Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? The wise men asked about the King of the Jews. This would have been offensive to Herod, who was the king of the Jews already. The King of the Jews in this case was not only physical but also spiritual. The Jewish people are God’s chosen people. The royal line of Jesus is all Jewish. Herod saw his reign coming to end because of a baby.
For we have seen His star in the East. News of the star had travelled far and wide so the wise men knew about this star and were following it like a navigation system. This star would have to have shown quite bright in order for people everywhere to see it. This was also on purpose so that people could see that Jesus was someone special. This star represented the glory of God that shone over His precious Son. The glory of God was so bright that it would have shone brighter than anything else in the sky. That was, shepherds, wise men, and others could come and see Jesus, the baby who would one day save the world from sin.
Have come to worship Him. The second problem for Herod came when the wise men said they wanted to worship Jesus. The king wanted everyone to worship him and would not have anyone else to be getting the attention. The Roman government would also not want Jesus to get this attention because Jesus was not their choice for king. Herod was easily controlled; Jesus would not be controlled. Jesus was the deserving One to be worshipped. The wise men were correct to come to Jesus and worship Him.
Thank You for sending Your Son to this world for us. He is our King. He is worthy of our worship. You always have a plan for us and had a plan back then. You kept Your Son safe, just like You keep us safe. We owe You our lives, which is why we ask You to take our lives and use us for Your honor and Your glory.
In Your name we pray,
