The Birth of the Savior (Part 7 of 7)

Matthew 1:18-25, “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.”

Verse 24, 25: Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son.  And he called His name Jesus.

Joseph, being aroused from sleep.  All the time that this was happening, Joseph was asleep.  Whether he was woken up by the angel or just was done resting, he got up.  He was awake and would have taken a moment to process all that he had seen in his dream.

Did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.  Joseph did exactly what the angel told him to do.  He did not question it.  He did not ask his friends for their opinion.  He did not go to social media to poll the people on there.  What the angel said, he did.  He knew that what the angel said came from God and that he should obey the words of God.

Took to him his wife.  Joseph took Mary as his wife.  He was assured that she did not do anything wrong.  She was pure and would make him a great wife.  Joseph knew this because God let him know.  This was all part of the plan of God.  These would be the earthly parents of Jesus.

Did not know her.  Joseph did not live with or sleep with Mary until after the birth of Jesus.  This was to ensure that nothing perverse happened.  This was to make sure that they each stayed pure.  They would not want to be unclean.  It was also part of God’s plan as Mary needed to go into labor at the correct time.

Till she had brought forth her firstborn Son.  Mary was to bring Jesus into the world as her firstborn Son.  This was all part of the prophecy that was foretold and Mary was needed to fulfill this.  The prophecy would not work if this was her 4th or 5th child.  It must be her first.

And he called His name Jesus.  His name was to be called Jesus.  This name was chosen by God.  Jesus was to be the Savior of the world.  This name would strike fear in demons, heal the sick, give sight to the blind and make the lame walk.  Sin and death would have no chance against Jesus.  Jesus would be 100 percent man and 100 percent God.  All at the same time.

This time of the year is special. It is meant to be spent with family and friends.  Remember that Jesus is the reason why we celebrate and have freedom from sin.  Be safe and have a blessed rest of 2017.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Joseph, Mary and especially Jesus.  Help us to trust You like Joseph and Mary.  Help us to learn from Your Son, Jesus.  We need Your salvation.  As we approach a new year, help us to change our ways more and more toward You.  You are God and You care for us, which is why You sent Your Son to Earth for us.

In Your name we pray,

Amen
