Matthew 1:18-25, “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.”
Verse 22: So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
All this was done. The dream with the angel was concluded and Joseph was now needing to process what had just happened. There was a purpose to the dream that Joseph had and it was all part of the plan of God to comfort Joseph regarding his wife and baby.
That it might be fulfilled. The whole dream was all part of an Old Testament prophecy. This was all what God wanted to have happen so that everything was in place for His Son to come to Earth. God had planned this well in advance and knew that Joseph would need this dream to understand what was happening.
Which was spoken by the Lord. This is a reminder that everything that had happened is of God. There was no outside plan by man. Mary did not get pregnant by Joseph. She did not get pregnant by another man. Joseph did not need to worry. Everything that was going on was all due to God.
Through the prophet. The prophet that was mentioned in this text was Isaiah. Isaiah was an Old Testament prophet who was given several glimpses into the coming of Jesus. Isaiah foretold what God had shown to him regarding a baby being born of a virgin. He was to be a boy. His name was to be Jesus. He would be the Savior of the world.
Thank You for giving dreams to us. There is so much power in dreams and in prophecy. You let us know what we need to know and what we don’t need, You wait until we need it. You are far wiser than us. You are God and we are not. Help us to trust in You like Joseph did. We can all learn to be more patient and wait on You.
In Your name we pray,
