The Birth of the Savior (Part 1 of 7)

Matthew 1:18-25, “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.  Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.  But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.  And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His nameJesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”  So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:  “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”  Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son.  And he called His name Jesus.”

Verse 18: Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows.  For the next 7 days, I will be focusing on the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of Mary and Joseph and the Heavenly Son of God the Father.  The story is told in the book of Matthew as shown above.  The events that happened at in detail will be outlined verse by verse.  The next 7 days are about the birth of the Savior of the world.

After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph.  The earthly parents of Jesus were Joseph and Mary.  In those times, women were given to men to be married by her family.  This would be a betrothal ceremony.  This is similar to our engagements today.  In a betrothal, the woman’s family would give something of value to the man’s family in exchange for the son marrying the daughter.  Mary was given to Joseph to be married.

Before they came together.  Now when two people were betrothed or engaged, they would not live together until they were married.  Each person would live with their families until they were bound together in marriage.  This was to protect against sexual immorality.  This was a serious offense at this time and a woman being with a man before marriage could get her stoned, which was a death sentence.

She was found with child.  Now Joseph and Mary were not living together, yet Mary became pregnant.  This would have been odd to many and they would have suspected that Mary slipped out to be with Joseph and made a baby together.  Again, the severity of this would mean that Mary would have been impure and deserving of death.  Having a child was a serious matter that was to only be enjoyed by a married couple.

Of the Holy Spirit.  This pregnancy is not of natural terms.  This pregnancy was of a supernatural occurrence.  God put the baby inside of Mary without Mary having to have been with Joseph.  This was because this baby was special.  He was to be human and born of a human but He was also God.  He was perfect unlike any human ever was.  That is Jesus.  All man and all God at the same time.  The Holy Spirit (The third part of the triune God) made sure that Mary was carrying Jesus to full term and that no harm would come to her.  This birth would be the most important of all history to date and forevermore.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the birth of Jesus.  It is so amazing that You sent Your Son to Earth in the most fragile of forms to live on Earth, live as we live and then die for us.  Thank You that You kept Mary safe so that she would be able to protect the baby Jesus.  You are such an amazing God.  Your ways never cease to amaze me.  Through this Christmastime, help us to always remember Your Son who was born to save the world.

In Your name we pray,
