Live by the Flesh, Die by the Flesh

Romans 8:13, “For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

How we live is so important.  We need to be careful on the choices that we make, from what to say to what we do.  We have to be aware of the things that we see, touch, and where we go.  So many obstacles can stand in our path to God.  When we live by the flesh, we die by the flesh.  But there is so much more for us.

If you live.  This is a hypothetical statement.  It is also a warning system.  There are two ways to live: the worldly way and the Godly way.  We are, thanks to God, given a choice as to how to live.  We can make a choice every day whom we want to serve.  We can serve God or we can serve the world.  We can live for what there is on this Earth or live for more than that.  We have to make this choice.

According to the flesh.  The flesh will fail.  The flesh will always fail.  According the flesh is less than perfect.  The flesh is the opposite of everything that God is.  God is perfect, cannot sin, cannot die.  The flesh is not meant to last forever like God.  It falls apart.

You will die.  This is a fact of life.  Everything that lives, dies.  We take in breath and then we breathe.  Blood circulates and then it stops.  The brain functions and then it doesn’t.  It is inevitable that we will die.  The question is where we go when we die.  Do we stay in the ground?  Do we all go to Heaven or some other place?  The fact is some go to Heaven and many others go to Hell.  This is as certain as life and death.

If by the Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is given as a companion to those that invite Jesus.  When we act, we should act by the Spirit.  That means that we need to take all of our guidance from God.  This will make sure that our life choices are correct.  We need to listen to the Holy Spirit in all that we do and if we are in doubt, we need to consult Him.

You put to death.  By living by the Spirit, we have to put to death some things.  We have to put to death our sins.  Our earthly lives.  Our imperfections.  We cannot do this alone though.  We need Jesus.  We need the blood of Jesus to wash over us.  We need the love of Jesus to cover us and make us whole.  Jesus went to the cross to die for our sins.  We need to go to the cross and confess our sins.  We must kill off our old selves and embrace a new self.

The deeds of the body.  These deeds are so many and are not of God.  They are sins.  Things done outside of God are not of God.  God wants us to do things that are honoring and pleasing to Him.  He is our God.  Our bodies will let us down.  We do so many things that are not of God but we can do the right thing if we listen to God.

You will live.  God wants to give us eternal life.  Life after physical death.  This is what God gives to those that accept His Son as Lord and Savior over their lives.  God wants us to have life.  We may live if we are willing to deny living for the world.  There is so much more than this life.  We must trust and obey God and believe that He is who He says He is.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your Son, who died for our sins.  Help us to follow You and deny ourselves what is of the world.  Let us give up our old lives and embrace new ones.  You are our God.  We need You every day.

In Your name we pray,

Amen
