Romans 3:10-18, “As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.” “Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit”; “The poison of asps is under their lips”; “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; Destruction and misery are in their ways; And the way of peace they have not known.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Verse 13: “Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit”; “The poison of asps is under their lips”
Their throat is an open tomb. A tomb is a place for death. They contain the remains of once was. Tombs also contain all the smell that is decomposition. So when a throat is like an open tomb, it is like that of a tomb that has not been sealed. Decay will happen faster which means the smell will occur faster and be more potent. Our throats contain our vocal chords, where our sounds come out. This can be good sounds, which are honoring and pleasing to God. This can also be bad sounds that are not pleasing to God.
With their tongues they have practiced deceit. Along with the throat is the tongue. The tongue is a powerful thing. It has the power to build up or tear down. It has the power to tell of love or hate. It is guided by the heart and mind of the individual. Deceit is lying. It is a misrepresentation of the truth. We are so capable of telling the truth but that does not always happen. Sometimes a lie seems simpler. This may fool men but it will never fool God. God sees through the lies and deceit.
The poison of asps is under their lips. Asps are snakes. Asps are poisonous snakes. The poison in this case is evil speaking. It is found in the throat, on the tongue, and under the lips. It pollutes the whole body. Evil can spread like wildfire if left unchecked. This is why there needs to be introspection. Look within to avoid the poison even coming out or being produced.
There is so much filth in this world. It infects and permeates. It creeps around and into homes. We need to take care to not allow this to infiltrate our lives. With our throats, we produce sounds honoring and pleasing to the Lord. With our tongues, we speak kindness and respect. With our lips, we avoid evil and seek good. Let us seek God in all that we do, day in and day out.
Thank You for Your perfect example. You showed us the way to live a perfect life. We cannot be perfect but through Your grace, we do not have to be. Thank You for Your love. We would be lost without You. You are our Light in a dark world. You shine brighter than the sun. You are magnificent. You are glorious. We need You every hour of every day. Help us to seek You first in all things.
In Your name we pray,
