Psalms 1:1-6, “Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.”
Ungodliness. Righteousness. Two sides of a coin. Opposites. One who chooses God and one who chooses to deny God. This passage shows the two sides and what it means to be each. Because of free will, we can choose. We can choose to avoid ungodliness and choose righteousness today and every day.
Not walking in the counsel of the ungodly. This is the blessed man. A righteous man knows better than to walk in the same direction as someone who does not follow God. There are always 2 choices: the Godly choice and the ungodly choice. The blessed man chooses the Godly choice.
Not standing in the path of sinners. Sinners are on a path that leads away from God. The righteous should not be on the same path and in the same direction as sinners. The righteous should set themselves apart from the people of the world as the righteous are not of this world. The righteous are part of Heaven and with God. The sinner is separated from God.
Not sitting in the seat of the scornful. The righteous should not sit in the same seat as a person who is a mocker. A jeerer. A scoffer. Those who do that are sinful and that is not a behavior of the righteous. The righteous are kind and considerate. The righteous are not to treat others poorly.
Delight in the law of the Lord. The righteous should be happy with the laws of the Lord. Serving God should not be a horrible task but a joyful experience. There should be happiness when looking at the laws that God has. What God expects is light compared to what the world expects of us. God does not want us to change before coming to Him. The change comes after salvation.
Meditation day and night on the law. In order to learn about the Bible, it has to be read. Not for 15 minutes. Not for an hour. It needs to be read as much as can be read. In order to know what the Bible says, it needs to be learned. By spending time in the Bible, you can become closer to God.
Tree planted by water. Trees planted by water grow. All trees need water. It helps them get bigger and bigger and more mature. This is like a man who reads the Word of God. He gets bigger and bigger in God and more mature in God as well. Strength comes from feeding on the Word of God just like the strength of a tree comes from the food and water that it receives.
Brings forth fruit in season. In order to show if a tree is useful, it produces fruit. The fruit is used for food and to grow more of the same tree. In humans, the “fruit” is the words and actions that are said and done. The fruit is what God wants to see, whether it is good fruit or bad fruit. The righteous show good fruit. The sinful man shows bad fruit. Fruit can change based on the beliefs of the person just like fruit can change in plants due to outside forces like pollination and water.
Leaf shall not wither. When a tree starts to die, its leaves wither. They lose the water out of themselves and shrink. In people, sin causes them to wither and die. Spiritual death happens when the soul is not watered and fed by God. God is the sustainer of people and when people feel that they can be on their own, they will die, both physically and spiritually.
Prosper in all. When trust is put in God, everything that is done will prosper. That is if what is done is part of God’s plan. God has a plan for each and every person on this Earth. This means that each person has a set of instructions that they are to follow from birth to death. No one knows these plans except for God. Through prayer, this plan can be shared but only as much as God wants us to know.
Ungodly are not like the righteous. These two categories are polar opposites. For everything that the ungodly does, the righteous do the opposite, which is to follow God completely. The ungodly choose not to follow God. No person can be righteous all the time but with Jesus, people can be righteous. It is through salvation from the Christ that we are saved.
Chaff that is blown away. When a crop is harvested, there is the grain that is saved and the chaff that is not needed. The chaff does not serve any purpose. It blows away when the crop is harvested. This is how the ungodly are. They are not the fruit that is wanted but the chaff that blows away or is burned. This is not what God wants for us. He wants us to be fruit, not chaff.
Ungodly not standing in judgement. When we die, we will go before God. No one will be able to stand before God and His perfect righteousness. When judgement comes, there will be some that go to Heaven with God and there will be still others that go to Hell and destruction and damnation. The ungodly, those who chose not to serve and know God, will not stand with God but will be in opposition to God. They will be sent far away from God forever.
Sinners congregating with the righteous. When people go before God, the righteous will be with God and the sinners will not be with God. The sinners will be those that did not come to a saving knowledge of Jesus. They chose the world over God. Chose to serve the creation rather than the Creator. Idols instead of the true God. Sinners are not welcome in Heaven apart from being cleansed by the blood of Jesus first. Only when Jesus enters into the soul of a person does one come to be with God forever in Heaven.
Lord knows the way of the righteous. God knows His creation. All of it. He knows who will choose Him and who will deny Him. God knows what is going to happen before it happens. That is because God is perfect. He did create all things.
The way of the ungodly perish. God does not want people to perish. That is not what He had in mind when the Garden of Eden was created. Those that do not choose to follow God do perish. There is another place that is made for those that will not choose God to serve. All die a physical death but those that follow God get to avoid spiritual death. They get eternal life, not eternal torment. Eternal happiness, not eternal pain and suffering. That is the way of the righteous and that is the way of the ungodly. 2 paths. One God. One choice. Choose God or go against Him.
Thank You that we are not forced to serve You but that we are given a choice. We do not have to serve You but we want to serve You. We want to be with You forever and that is why we ask for forgiveness from You. Thank You for sending Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so that we may be counted as righteous. We do not want to be counted as ungodly, separated from You forever. Help us to serve You in all that we do.
In Your name we pray,
