Malachi 1:6-14, “’A son honors his father, And a servant his master.  If then I am the Father, Where is My honor?  And if I am a Master, Where is My reverence?  Says the Lord of hosts To you priests who despise My name.  Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’  ‘You offer defiled food on My altar’, But say, ‘In what way have we defiled You?’  By saying, ‘The table of the Lord is contemptible.’  And when you offer the blind as a sacrifice, Is it not evil?  And when you offer the lame and sick, Is it not evil?  Offer it then to your governor!  Would he be pleased with you?  Would he accept you favorably?’  Says the Lord of hosts.  ‘But now entreat God’s favor, That He may be gracious to us.  While this is being done by your hands, Will He accept you favorably?’  Says the Lord of hosts.  ‘Who is there even among you who would shut the doors, So that you would not kindle fire on My altar in vain?  I have no pleasure in you,’ Says the Lord of hosts, ‘Nor will I accept an offering from your hands.  For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the nations,’ Says the Lord of hosts.  ‘But you profane it, In that you say, ‘The table of the Lord is defiled; And its fruit, its food, is contemptible.’’  You also say, ‘Oh, what a weariness!’  And you sneer at it,’ Says the Lord of hosts.  ‘And you bring the stolen, the lame, and the sick; Thus you bring an offering!  Should I accept this from your hand?’  Says the Lord.  ‘But cursed be the deceiver Who has in his flock a male, And takes a vow,  But sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished—For I am a great King,’ Says the Lord of hosts, ‘And My name is to be feared among the nations.'”

Malachi 1:10, “‘Who is there even among you who would shut the doors, So that you would not kindle fire on My altar in vain?  I have no pleasure in you,’ Says the Lord of hosts, ‘Nor will I accept an offering from your hands.'”

Day 5 of the study.  There is so much that God deserves.  Today we will see again what brings God no happiness.  We will see how not to act toward God.

Shutting the doors.  A closed door is a way to shut things out or shut things in.  It creates a barrier between one portion and another.  With God, we try to create barriers.  We try to separate how we acts with people and how we act with God.  Obviously God can see through this and can see into our hearts.  We cannot trick God.  We cannot stop God from going through our barriers.

Must try to not start God’s anger.  So many people no how to hit God’s anger buttons.  One that makes God angry is serving other gods.  The people of Israel did this many times in the Old Testament.  They would serve God for a time and then stray away.  Come back and stray away again.  Each time, God would get angry and punish them and then bring them back to Him.  This is how we are to God as well.  We follow God when it is convenient for us.  It is not about us though; it is about God.

When we start God’s anger, He takes no pleasure in us.   God wants us to follow Him and not other gods.  Him and not the world.  Him alone.  God is truly a jealous God.  Jealous with sin.  Jealousy can occur in a righteous status when it is God that is feeling it.  God created us.  Imagine how angry you would be if your children did not follow you or listen to you.  Instead, they followed 2 other people who were not their parents.  You would be angry and jealous that your children are listening and following other people.  This is how it is with God.  God wants us to listen and follow God because He made us.  He loves us.  That is why God corrects us.  That is why God gets jealous.

We need to learn to show God love.  God deserves our love, our attention, and our affection.  Our lives should not be devoted solely to work, sports, money, or anything else.  We should be solely devoted to God.  Make God our God.  Make God our only God that we serve.  He is worthy of our time.  Let us honor His name.  Let us bow in reverence to Him always.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for all that You do for us.  We will serve You alone.  We will serve You always.  If we stray from You, help us to come back to You.  You know that we are not perfect but never let us use that as an excuse to do wrong.  Help us to be more like You.  Help us to follow You more.  You are our God and we are Your people.  Let us give You all the credit and not serve other gods, robbing You of what You deserve.  You know our hearts.  Help us to tear down walls that we put up to you.

In Your great name we pray,

Amen
