What Does God Deserve? A 9 Part Study

Malachi 1:6-14, “’A son honors his father, And a servant his master.  If then I am the Father, Where is My honor?  And if I am a Master, Where is My reverence?  Says the Lord of hosts To you priests who despise My name.  Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’  ‘You offer defiled food on My altar’, But say, ‘In what way have we defiled You?’  By saying, ‘The table of the Lord is contemptible.’  And when you offer the blind as a sacrifice, Is it not evil?  And when you offer the lame and sick, Is it not evil?  Offer it then to your governor!  Would he be pleased with you?  Would he accept you favorably?’  Says the Lord of hosts.  ‘But now entreat God’s favor, That He may be gracious to us.  While this is being done by your hands, Will He accept you favorably?’  Says the Lord of hosts.  ‘Who is there even among you who would shut the doors, So that you would not kindle fire on My altar in vain?  I have no pleasure in you,’ Says the Lord of hosts, ‘Nor will I accept an offering from your hands.  For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the nations,’ Says the Lord of hosts.  ‘But you profane it, In that you say, ‘The table of the Lord is defiled; And its fruit, its food, is contemptible.’’  You also say, ‘Oh, what a weariness!’  And you sneer at it,’ Says the Lord of hosts.  ‘And you bring the stolen, the lame, and the sick; Thus you bring an offering!  Should I accept this from your hand?’  Says the Lord.  ‘But cursed be the deceiver Who has in his flock a male, And takes a vow,  But sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished—For I am a great King,’ Says the Lord of hosts, ‘And My name is to be feared among the nations.'”

Malachi 1:6, “A son honors his father, And a servant his master.  If then I am the Father, Where is My honor?  And if I am a Master, Where is My reverence?  Says the Lord of hosts To you priests who despise My name.  Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’”

Honor and reverence.  Two traits that are lacking in this world.  In this first part of a nine part series I am doing, we will look at how God deserves honor and reverence.  God truly is worthy of both and deserves that we give both to Him.

A son honors his father.  In the not so distant past, there was respect between a father and son.  The son would listen and take advice from his dad.  He would honor him by doing as he was told to do.  He would use manners and treat his dad as he would want to be treated.  Today, children have listen respect for dads or moms for that matter.  There are no manners.  There are few nice words to say.  The honor aspect is gone.  This is due to the adult and a habit of purposeless parenting.  The adults today have lost their children and as a result, honor is gone.

A servant to a master.  If a servant did not honor their master, they could be beaten or killed.  There was an aspect of fear in the heart of the servant.  There is no chance of a servant talking back to their masters.  The master was in complete control.  Honor was not freely given as much as it was demanded.

So a human father deserves honor and a master deserves honor, but where is God the Father’s honor?  God, the creator of the world and everything in it, deserves honor.  He is a giver of life.  We would not exist apart from God.  God sustains us and keeps us.  Yet, for all God does, we do not return the favor.  We do not give the honor that He deserves.  God deserves so much more than He ever could get.

So a master deserves reverence, but where is God the Father’s reverence?  There is little reverence given to God.  We should be in awe of all that God does and is doing.  God works miracles every day and yet that is not good enough for us.  Diseases cured, people saved, mercies given.  This miracles should left us breathless but we are not.  We are more amazed by what the world does.  God does so much more than what the world has to offer.  God created the world so there is no way that the world can offer more than God.  God deserves the reverence, not the world.

God truly call us out on this like He with the priests.  People want to just expect things to happen.  That God will just be this jolly, happy guy who grants us our wishes and cares and never challenges us or makes us wait.  This is why God does not get honor or reverence.  We expect God to fit in our mold instead of us fitting in God’s mold.  The mold that God created, we cannot fill.  It is too much for us, for He is a perfect God.  God, in the same matter, will not fit into our mold of imperfection.  This is why God is despised.  God does not grant wishes but He does work miracles.

We need to make a change.  Away with the despise and usher in honor and reverence.  God is God.  He is our Father in Heaven.  He is our Master and we are His people.  He deserves all the honor and all the praise and all the reverence that we can muster up.  Not because we feel like it but because He deserves it.  He is the ruler of all.  He is the God above.  Let us show God more than we have been.  It is needed to make a change in this world here and now.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for all that You do.  We owe You all the honor and praise and glory and love and reverence that we can give.  You alone deserve it.  Not the world, not a person, not a place, not a fake deity made of wood, stone or metal.  You do so much for us and yet we are so unappreciative.  We owe it to You for the life that we have and life that we will have with You.  It is because of You that we have eternal life.

In Your name we pray,
