Mark 8:11-12, “Then the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him. But He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.”
Signs. A showing of something to come. So many people need to see to believe. Sometimes even seeing does not help one believe. Sometimes doubt is just in the heart. This is sometimes no sign occurs. Sometimes God leaves His plan to be seen by those who are really looking closely.
The Pharisees. The thorn in the side of Jesus. Always there to test Jesus and be a general bother. Jesus was never bested by them but they were a hinderance to the learning of others. Like a bully in school, they were pests who tried to poke holes in the teachings of Jesus.
In this passage, they again were testing, disputing and being a general nuisance to Jesus. They wanted a sign. After all Jesus had done to prove that He is who He says He is (healing the sick, raising the dead, water into wine), the Pharisees still needed a sign that Jesus was not God. Jesus, of course, realized this was only a test and would not give in to their demand.
Jesus answered them with a firm “no” to the sign. You can almost hear the frustration in Jesus’s voice. After all He had said and done, why must He show them more? Even if He did, He knew their hearts and knew that they would still not believe. The Pharisees were not about to be changed in heart. They were set that Jesus was not the Messiah, not the One that came to save the world.
How many people in this day and age are the same way? Always looking for a sign that God is real. Always looking for God to do something for them so that they believe. This is not always going to happen. God does not have to give a sign to believe in Him. God is evident all around. In the nature that we see, the animals that exist, the people who live. God is all around. He did create everything, after all.
In society, with all the fake news, illusions, Photoshop, and general sleight of hand/eye, it is hard to believe anything to be true. It is hard to trust that the Word of God is true. It is hard to believe that God is real. For all the signs and wonders and miracles, there is still faith required to believe. Faith is required to believe in God or not believe in God. Since after death is a seemingly unknown happening, you can choose to believe the Bible or not. The choice is there. Another sign from God will not change that view. Your view is dependent on a weighing of the facts. Faith will tip the scale to one direction or another. Therefore, no more signs are needed. Choose God, for He is all you need.
We belive in You. For those that do not, help that unbelief. Not in signs and wonders. Help in showing them us. Your creation living for You. How we live is an example of how to live for You. It is proof that You are who You say You are. We need You, not for signs, but for our daily bread. Our needs. You don’t need to proof Yourself to us. We simply need to believe that You are You. You are God, creator of Heaven and Earth. Thank You for all that You are.
In Your name we pray,
