1 Corinthians 3:5-8, “Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.”
There are those that plant. They are starters who get the ball rolling. There are those that water. Once the ball is rolling, they keep it rolling. Yet, for the one that get the ball rolling or the one who keeps the ball rolling, there is one who deserves all the credit. He is the reason why He is preached to all to make mature people. He is God and He deserves all the increase to His kingdom.
Paul was a starter. Paul, after his conversion, went on a trek and started churches all over the known Gentile world. He was very diligent to make sure that Christ was preached and all could come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. He made sure to come back to his churches when he could but sadly, he could not always give them the time that they needed.
Apollos was a waterer. He continued on what Paul had started. Apollos did not always preach the way he should have but after guidance from Priscilla and Aquila (Paul’s friends), he preached the Lord more accurately. He continued on what Paul had started and nurtured the churches of Paul’s.
Paul mentions that it does not matter what he did or what Apollos did. The person that preached Jesus is not important. The person that continued preaching Jesus is not important. The message is what is important. God is what is important.
The reward of those that preach Jesus is eternal life. This is what all who follow God hope for and long for. Yet, what God receives is so much more. God gets to call His creation home to Him. Sadly, not all of his creation comes back to Him but for those that do, He rejoices for each and every one. God is Light that all others point to. We should never want to take away from God. We should only want to give all of ourselves to God.
Whether you are a planter/starter or waterer/continuer, do that according to what God wants. God has a plan for each and every person and wants us to use the gift we were given. Paul had a gift and used it. Apollos had a gift and used it. Let us our gifts and do all in the name of God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Go forth and plant or water.
Whether we are planters or waterers, help us to do all for you. You give us the talent so that we give you the fruits of our labor. All that we do, we do for You and Your kingdom. We are a part of the kingdom but we are not equal to You. You deserve all the honor and all the glory and all the credit. You did, after all, send Your Son to die for our sins. Let us show our love to You by witnessing Your power and love to the world. Let us never be quiet about You.
In Your name we pray,
