Matthew 10:2-4, “Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.”
The twelve. The infamous 12 disciples of Jesus. Jesus’s closest students and friends. A lot can be learned from these 12 individuals that spent so much time with Jesus. One of the main lessons is that even God’s son, Jesus, had friends and people close to Him.
Friends are something that is very Biblical. Look at so many of the people in the Bible. Paul had Barnabas. Moses had Aaron. Peter had John. Jesus had His disciples. We are not meant to be alone and especially when we are preaching and teaching God’s Word. There is a strength in having others around us. A support system.
When you do not have a support system, loneliness and depression can set in. It can be difficult to complete tasks. This is why God created man and woman for marriage. Man and woman are there to comfort and be there for each other. This is also why God created friends. Friends work in much of the same ways as a married couple. They are there to help and comfort each other. Encourage each other. Lift up one another.
Jesus, when He took the form of man, had people with Him at all times. Not out of need as Jesus does not need people. Jesus had people around as a lesson. A lesson to show teaching and encouragement to others as Jesus did for His disciples. The disciples were also put together to have them work together. Jesus brought a group of people together that would not have normally hung out together and made them His students. They were to learn all they could from Jesus.
Friendships are good to have. If you have one, nurture it. Let it grow. Do not neglect it. Remember, if Jesus had people around Him, we should have people around us. We all need people. Yes, Jesus did need time away from everyone from time to time as do we. For the most part, having people around is a comfort that comes from God. Just be sure to have the right company around to be there for you.
Thank You for friendships. Thank You that You have shown us examples of how to be with others and that even Your Son had people around Him. Help us to be like You in our friendships so that we can show Your light and Your love. You are our best friend and our Father. We can come to You whenever we need to. Help us to be like that to others. Let us show Your essence every day.
In Your name we pray,
