Evil, Meant for Good

Genesis 50:20, “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.”

With so much evil in this world, it is hard to stay positive. Hard to stay afloat in a world that wants to sink your boat. People want to claw their way to the top of the pyramid. They do not care who they hurt. People do things for themselves. Time to break that mold. Time to think of all the evil we encounter, meant for good.

Joseph had a rough life. He could have easily complained about it. Given up. Pleaded with God to fix his life right away. But Joseph did not. He followed God. Joseph was not liked by his brothers, thrown in a pit, sold into slavery, forced to work for an Egyptian, thrown in jail on a lie, and watched 2 men leave prison before him, not helping him get out. Only after God gave Joseph the interpretation of a dream for the Pharaoh did Joseph’s life straighten out. He was still away from his people and especially his dad, whom he loved. All that happened to Joseph started out with evil from his brothers and ended in good from God by allowing Joseph to save Egypt and his people, Israel.

So much happens in our life. It might not always be puppy dogs and sunshine. Sometimes it is going to stink. Stink like rotten garbage. It will seem like God has given up on you. It will seem like God does not care. Believe me, been there. Thought that. Problem with that thinking is that it is false. God does care. God is there through it all. Bad things happen to assist us. Train us. Mold us. Bad things for good.

It has been said that much more is learned from failure than success. I believe that. When I fail, I try harder the next time. I don’t do the same things I did when I failed. The same occurs with evil. When evil happens, we can choose to use that or let it get us down. Choose to allow the lesson or blame God for it happening to us. Joseph knew that God had allowed all of it to happen to build him up and not tear him down. Sometimes, though, we to be like Joseph. Find the good in the evil.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being by our side. Thank You for never leaving us. You never promise that only good things will happen to us. You do promise that when the bad things happen, You will not leave us. We need You to be there always. We can truly count on You. You are our God and we are Your people. Let us see the lesson in what happens to us.

In Your name we pray,

Amen
