Strength and Courage amid Fear

Deuteronomy 31:6, “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Strength and courage.  This is what God wants and expects of us.  After all, God does go before us and fights for us.  We are never left alone because God is there.  God is our strength and courage.  All amid the fear.

In this passage, Moses was passing the leadership torch from himself to Joshua.  Moses was reaching the end of his life.  His time on Earth was almost done.  He had fought against Pharaoh and gotten the people of Israel out of Egypt.  It was now time for Joshua to take over and lead the people into the land that God had promised his people.  It was time to step up and face the challenge ahead.

The problem was this: there were armies to defeat in the promised land.  Worse yet, there were giants.  This was a discouragement to the people who did not want to work to get what God promised.  They were hoping to just walk in and take what God was giving them.  God had a different idea.  God wanted His people to trust Him.  He wanted His people to have strength and courage.  God would fight the fight for them if they would only trust.

God will not always give us what we want or need.  He makes us work for what we need.  The people of Israel needed to have a place to call their own.  It would not be easy but God had a plan.  In the midst of fear, there was a plan and there needed to be a leader to get them through the fear.  Someone with courage and strength can still have fear.  The difference is that someone who has true strength and courage does not allow the fear to rule.  Fear limits God’s power.  God is bigger than any enemy, any situation, anything.  Have God fight for you as God fought for His people in the days of Moses and Joshua.

Like a warrior that goes into battle, we must go into battle against the enemies of God.  The world and things of the world are against God.  We must fight to not become part of the world.  We must fight to be of the next world, Heaven.  We will have fear.  We must have trust.  God is always there.  This world can only do so much to you,  Be careful that your soul belongs to God.  Have God guard your soul so that you may have the strength and courage of God.  Your strength and courage will fail but God’s will not.  Not now.  Not ever.

Heavenly Father,

You are our strength and courage.  We have nothing to fear when we have You.  You are there to fight our battles.  You are there.  Help us not fear anything but to move forward in life.  You will never leave us or turn Your back on us.  We thank You for all that You are and all that You do.  Just as You were with Joshua, You are with us.  You truly go before us.  We need You every day and every night.  Thank You.

In Your name we pray,

Amen
