Isaiah 40:3, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God.”
Jesus, without a doubt, walked the Earth. He walked the Earth in the form of a man. Before Jesus came, there was another man who walked the Earth. His name was John the Baptist. He had one task: prepare for the Light of the World that was to come. Preparing the Way of the Lord.
John the Baptist was a good man that preached about the coming of Jesus and as his name suggests: he was a baptizer. He baptized people in the name of the Lord and he did it with water. This was in preparation of the coming of Jesus, who would come to baptize those in fire. The fire of the Spirit that would light a room and cause a room full of people to speak in tongues. Fire that would ignite the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Fire that would sweep through nations at an alarming rate. Fire in the soul.
John was not Jesus though. So many tried to give John the credit and treat him like he was the savior. John continued to refute that claim. He continually stated that he was not the Light, but he was only a light that pointed to the Light. He was not God. He could have claimed that but he never did. Even when approached by Jesus, he did not feel worthy to loose His sandal, let alone baptize Jesus. Jesus had to reassure John that this was the plan.
John operated outside of the common areas that people gathered. People who wanted to hear John preach and baptize would have had to go out to the wilderness to hear him or see him. This is as much on purpose as a way to make sure to avoid persecution. John needed a place where he could tell about Jesus and it worked. People would come from far and away to here John preach.
There is a message in all of this for us. We are to be a light for the Light. We are to shine so bright and direct the attention to our Lord and Savior. We can preach and we can teach all about Jesus. We have the tools. No training required. Go out and talk about Jesus. Show what Jesus has done in your life. Live a life that shows the God you serve. Do not be of this world. Do not be like the world so that you and the world look the same. Shine apart from the world just as God shines apart from the world. We can all be “John the Baptist’s.” We can all prepare the way for Jesus to enter people who do not yet know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Prepare the way for Jesus to come in today.
I humbly ask that you use me and others like me to further Your kingdom. You are such a gracious God and have done so much for us. Prepare the hearts of those that do not yet know You. Prepare them for deliverance from their sins and the destruction to come. They do not realize how badly they need You. Help us to show Your Light through us. Help us to have the words to say that we bring people to You. Let us be Your messengers, carrying the good news that You sent Your Son to die for the world. You are good. You are the Way. Help us to show others the Way.
In Your name we always love and pray,
