1 John 2:15-16, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.“
The things of the world. Put in our lives to assist us but not to dominate our lives. The things of the world are not meant to replace God. They are meant to be used to honor and praise God. Things of the world that can be used to praise and honor God are money, time, and even technology.
Though the things of this world can be good, there is a fine line between them being good and them being loved more than God. At the top of your “love list,” you should place God. He should always be first. Next is your spouse if you have one. Children if you have them. Family as everyone has one. Everything else should come after that.
Do not love the world. Why love a world that fades away when you can love a God that will never fade away or leave you. God has always existed. He is the only one in the world that was not created. He is the creator, not part of the creation. He is not a “thing.” The things of the world die, fade, destroy, fade, break and crumble. God does none of that. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
For those that still choose to love the world, they cannot love God. No one can love God and the world. They are polar opposites. It is the same as trying to like both bland food and spicy food. Most people will have a preference for one over the other. God is everything the world is not. The world is nothing like God. God distances himself from the things of the world because He is righteous. Only through Jesus can anyone come to God because of the “oppositeness” we have with God.
Lust. Lust is a strong emotion or longing. Most of the time lust is thought of in regards to people lusting after each other. Not love but lust. Wanting someone or something too much. Wanting something so much that you would be willing to do anything to get it. Pride is another of the sins that we are to avoid along with lust. God wants us to love like he loves and avoid lust. Lust is a sin because of our sinful nature. Our eyes want what we can see. Instead, we should want what we cannot see. What we cannot see is God.
Let us love God more than anything else. Let us be passionate about our creator who made us. Let us leave behind all the things of the world that detract from serving and loving the almighty God of the universe. God wants us to seek Him with all our heart, all our mind, and all our soul. Why chase after that which fades away? Chase after God. He is all the reward we need.
Thank you for Your love. Thank You for You lessons on avoiding what is of the world. It is so easy to get wrapped up in what You created that we lose sight of You. Draw us nearer to You so that we may serve You better. I pray that we never lose sight of our true purpose. Our purpose of loving and serving and praising You. Our goal is Heaven above with You. I pray that we give up on the world and aspire for more than what Earth has to offer. Let us long and yearn for You always.
In Your name we pray,
