3 John 1:11, “Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.”

Imitation.  There is imitation of that which is good and imitation of that which is bad.  Imitation is a two-way street.  In life, there are good examples to follow and there are bad examples to follow.  Throughout history, there have been good people and bad people.  The decision is needed to be good or bad.  Choose right and wrong.

In the text, it states “Beloved.”  The writer is referring to people who are loved and with love, comes caring about others.  Caring whether someone does good or does bad.  Caring about the souls of the people involved.  Love also leads to the next part.

“Do not imitate what is evil.”  Evil.  Things that are contrary to the perfect God that created us.  Evil involves sin.  Sin is separation from God.  Therefore, evil has no part of God as God cannot be evil.

“What is good.”  God is good.  In the truest sense of good, only God can be good.  Good requires a sinless nature.  We cannot be sinless.  We do, however, serve a God who is perfect and has made a way for us to be perfect too.  This is made possible by the shed blood of Jesus on the cross.  Jesus’ death made the way for us to be perfect like God is perfect.  Without the blood, we are all doomed to an afterlife that is far from Heaven.

“He who does good is of God.”  This goes back to the fact that only God is good.  With God, we can be too but without God there is no chance to be good.  We can only be partly good.  This means that if we are not all good, we are all bad.  There is no in-between.  There is no middle ground.  God is good.  Anything less is less than perfect.  Less than what God expects.

“He who does evil has not seen God.”  The fact is that anyone who does evil and is not forgiven will not be with God.  At the time of judgement, all those who are unrepentant will surely meet God but will not stay with God in Heaven.  Heaven is reserved for those who are forgiven by God from the sins committed.

Heavenly Father,

You are our perfect example.  You show us what is good.  It is on us to be good like You are good.  I pray that we listen to You and act as You act.  We need You so much every day and cannot live without You.  Thank You for being our God and Father.  Thank You for all that You do for us.  You are good.  We know that we cannot be good without You.  I pray that those who are unforgiven become forgiven.  I pray that all come to know You.

In Your name we pray,

Amen
