Nahum 1:2-3, “God is jealous, and the Lord avenges; The Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies; The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, And will not at all acquit the wicked.”
In modern terminology, jealousy is known as the “green-eyed monster.” There is also “green with envy.” Green is associated with jealousy in many aspects (except on a ship or plan where someone is green or seasick/sick). Though God does not become green, He is jealous in the truest sense of the word.
God is jealous. He does not like to share. He likes all the attention and deserving it is. He is the creator of the world and all that is in it. Why would He not be at the center of the universe? Yet, so many people do not put God first. They put things of the world or His creation before the creator. God is usually last, if mentioned at all. It is sad, but true.
The Lord avenges. The second part is that a jealous God becomes an avenging God. Those who are not for God are against HIm. Those who are against Him will be brought to justice. Those who do not place God first will feel the wrath of God. God becomes furious. His anger gets aroused because God wants everyone to serve Him as He is their Creator.
God will destroy His enemies. Those who are not for Him will be removed from before Him. Sin is one of God’s biggest enemy. Sin is inside every single human that existed except for one and His name was Jesus. Therefore, everyone that comes before God is unacceptable and must be punished. The difference is that those who invite Jesus in their heart as Lord and Savior will not be punished like those who do not. God will spare those who align themselves with Christ. When He sees people who accepted Jesus, He does not see sin. When He sees people who deny Christ, He sees all their sin and evil.
God’s wrath is slow and is only reserved for those who deserve it. All deserve it but some are spared. God’s wrath is slow in that He allows us to come to Him in our time. He could just destroy all humans for their sin. He could say that we are a lost cause. No one seeks God on their own all the time. We get off the path. We lose our way. God is not quick to destroy. He has only destroyed all of human kind once and that was a truly dire time. All were wicked except for 8 individuals (Noah, his wife and his 3 sons and 3 daughters-in-law). God vowed never to do that again and gave a sign called the rainbow.
God is great in power. As in the aforementioned paragraph, God destroyed all the world because of sin and evil. It takes great power to do what God does. It also takes great power to be God and restrain Himself from enacting judgment right away for sin. If we got what we deserved, Heaven would be offered to no one. Jesus would not have come to Earth to save us. God would just let us live and die and then be punished in Hell for all our sin.
The fact is God does not want to punish us. He does not want us to go to Hell. He did send His Son for us. He loves us so much. With this love, God will hold those who do not follow Him guilty. They will be sent to Hell to be tormented. This does not make God happy. This is not a choice by God but a choice by man. God desires that all be with Him. Those who follow Him will be not guilty of the sin and evil. That is because Jesus steps up and speaks out for us. He removes sin from those who are His. He is the Savior of the world.
In our thoughts today, let us meditate on God. God knows that we are all busy. The fact is though that we need to give time to God. Let us all be habitual in our giving of time to God. Spend time in His Word. Pray. Just find a quiet place and talk to God. This is good for you and will help to be closer to God. I know that in my life, this helps my whole attitude and how I treat others. I need my time with God. Let us not make God jealous. Let us give back to God the time that He deserves.
We are a sinful people. We do not give You nearly enough time that we should. We fill our days with work, school, activities, and entertainment that we are involved in. This does not leave us with much time for You. Help us to make time for You. Help us to desire You first. You should be our first thought in the morning and our last thought before we go to bed. Our lives should be so intertwined with You. You are our God. Let us live our lives like that has meaning. I pray that we all give You all the glory, all the dominion, all the power and all the time that You so rightfully deserve. You give us life. The least we can do is spend time with You, Father.
In Your name we pray,
