Romans 13:1-2. “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.  Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.”

Governing authorities.  Could be a mayor, senator, governor, your local police officers, or even the president.  Could be a king or a prime minister or any other ruler.  These are all governing authorities and all deserve to be obeyed and respected.

Every soul is subject to their governing authority.  That does not exclude anyone.  This is for everyone.  God is the governing authority of all of Heaven and Earth and we are subject to Him.  God put the people in power that are in power according to His plan.  Therefore, we are to be subject to the governing authorities.  Does that mean we compromise who we are in Christ?  Of course not!  God would never want us to follow something that is against Him.  There are laws though that do not go against God such as speed limits and parking signs that have to be followed.

All power is given by God.  No one has power apart from God.  At a moment’s notice, life can be taken or life can be given by God.  All the air that we breathe is from God.  Our hearts beat and our lungs expand or contract because of God.  It is not anything of ourselves.  We cannot make our hearts beat because we are not God.  We do not have the power of God.  We have little if any control of life.

Whatever country you live in, your governing authorities are appointed by God.  Sure we have elections and we vote but ultimately, God is in control.  Whether your favorite president is elected or not, God is still in control.  We are citizens of our respective countries but more importantly, we are citizens of Heaven.  God is our president, king, lord, and high governing power.  He is higher than all other governing powers combined.

We should not resist authority.  It is against God to resist authority.  Again, this does not mean that you should go against God.  The United States (and many other countries) say it is legal to do lots of things but they do not always align with what God says in the Bible.  The words of the Bible supersede any law on any book for any country.  This does not mean that there will not be consequences for following God instead of your government but even Jesus, who is perfect, endured hardships based on who and how He was.

Those who resist governing authorities bring judgment on themselves.  By not listening to others in charge, it is like not listening to God.  Because they are put in the positions they are in by God, it is God that we are betraying by not obeying.  Countries have laws that are to be followed.   Those laws are in place because of man but God is over all of the men that make these laws.

Whether you agree or not, it is biblical to adhere to what your country’s laws are.  If you have a problem, work to change it.  Or move to a country that has better laws.  The choice is yours but remember, that we as Christ followers are not of the world.  We are citizens of Heaven and as citizens of Heaven, we must follow God above all else.  God is over all in all and has all the honor, glory, dominion and praise that is owed to Him as the Father, the maker of Heaven and Earth and everything that is or was or is to come.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You are in control.  This world is so uncertain with all the turmoil that is swirling in the governments around the world.  There is war and pestilence and famine and pain.  Yet, You are there.  You place the men and women that are in power in the places that they are to be in.  If it were not so, then You would not be the God You say You are.  You are my God and I am Your creation.  I serve You and in serving You, I will serve others that are in power over me.  I pray that all those who serve You will respect the authorities that are over them.  In this, we as Your followers show Your love, God.  We show that You are God.

In Your name we pray,

Amen
