Hebrews 11:22, “By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones.”

Joseph.  One of the sons of Jacob (Israel).  Joseph lived a long life with much adventure.  He was truly a man of God who needed to trust God at every turn.

Joseph’s “problems” started when he was young and given a coat of many colors.  This was a special gift and made his brothers jealous of him.  Their jealousy led to hate as if to kill him and get him out-of-the-way.  The brothers of Joseph wished that they were loved like he was loved.  Jacob did not show the same attention to the other 11 that he did to Joseph.

His dreams that he had did not help either.  Both of his dreams showed that his brothers would bow down in respect to Joseph.  That did not make his brothers like him even more.  That just made their minds wander to ways of eliminating him.

At first, they were just going to kill him.  Then they got the idea to sell him into slavery to make some money.  This led Joseph to be sent to Egypt but this was all part of the plan of God.  Much happened in Egypt to include his imprisonment for a crime he didn’t commit, foretelling dreams while in prison, foretelling a dream for the pharaoh, and then being placed in power only slightly less than the pharaoh.

In the end, Joseph’s brothers came to beg of him to save their lives from a famine that Joseph saw coming because of God.  They were all saved and even brought his dad to see him before his death.  Joseph came full circle from living the good life to peril and back to living the good life.

As Joseph was dying, he had one request and one more dream.  The dream foretold that the Israelite people, who were to be imprisoned by the Egyptians.  He saw out to many generations beyond himself and knew what would happen because of God.  This led to his request.  Joseph requested that his bones not be buried in Egypt.  He wanted to be buried in the promised land with the rest of his people, not the Egyptian people he lived with most of his life.

Joseph’s faith got him through his tough times.  Without faith in God, Joseph would have crumbled like a cookie.  God held Joseph together and had a plan for him the entire time.  God has a plan for each one of us.  God considers us all special and wants what is best for each of us.  This is why Joseph is listed in Hebrews 11.  This is why we should have faith like Joseph.

Heavenly Earth,

Thank You for the lesson on Joseph.  The life events that happened to him are beyond real and most of us would have given up under those circumstances.  Yet, Joseph maintained his faith in You, Lord.  He stayed faithful to You alone.  We ask for this same faith in the times that we are going through.  Every person is living a life and all lives are in Your control, Lord.  I pray over everyone that they have a faith in You like Joseph.  Times may seem tough now but You are there.  Thank you.

In Your name we pray,

Amen
