Jeremiah 17:7-8, “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LordAnd whose hope is the Lord.  For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.”

Blessed.  Blessed is the one who trusts and hopes in the Lord.  Establishing trust and hope can be difficult but with the Lord, this is easy.  In this world, people will let you down.  We are all imperfect.  Thankfully, we serve a God that is perfect in all, especially trust and hope.

Trust is earned.  In the case of God, He has never given a reason to not trust Him.  People will let us down.  We will let others down.  This goes without saying.  This is why our trust needs to be fully in God.

Hope is meant to be put in someone who is trustworthy.  Again, this is what God is.  God is always there for us, no matter the time or place.  This is why we must put our hope in the Lord alone.  He is worth our faith as He fulfills all the promises that He has stated.

With trust and hope in the Lord, we are to be like a tree that is planted near water.  When a tree is planted next to water, the root system does not have to go deep to find its life source.  Everything that a tree needs is right there, available.  God is our life source.  We must be like a tree that reaches out to God for our dependence.  We need God to live.  He sustains us.

The tree’s roots will continue to grow to find and keep its support system optimal.  As the tree grows, it will need more and more nutrients to sustain it.  It will also need more and more roots to make it strong to support its weight.  As we grow in our faith in God, we need to continue to seek the Word and pray in order to be really grounded in God.  As we get more mature in our faith, we will need to be grounded better to resist the evil.

A natural enemy to a tree is fire.  Fire will destroy trees and entire forests.  As Christians, we need to avoid the “heat”  The “heat” in this case is the attacks of the evil one, Satan.  Early Christians need to be concerned as well mature Christians.  No one is immune to the devil’s attacks.  We need to learn to depend wholly on God to resist these attacks and allow God to handle the heat and douse the flames.  God is our protects, like a fireman who extinguishes a flame.

Green is an excellent color for a tree.  This is the sign that a tree is healthy.  We need to strive to be green and healthy when evil comes around.  Evil will seek to kill the tree and make it turn brown.  God will keep us healthy if we rely on Him.  We must learn to trust that God is our strength in times of need.

Trees suffer in a drought.  This is when a tree has to hunker down and set more roots to find water.  These are bleak times for a tree.  When evil comes around and we get away from God, we will endure times that are bleak.  They will seem lifeless and all hope will seem to be gone.  This is when our resolve will be tested.  This is when we need to bear down and trust in God even more than before.  God will get us through the dry periods.  God will lead us back to Him and His living water.

Through the dry periods, it is also important for a tree to continue to produce fruit.  A tree that does not fruit is not useful.  If we are going through times away from God, we need to continue to work on our trek back to God to produce good fruit.  Good fruit is only produced when we are connected to God.  Bad fruit will corrupt the whole tree and cause it to be chopped down.  Good fruit means a good tree and a good tree is what God desires us to be.

Trust, Hope, Tree, Good Fruit, Bad Fruit, God.  It all connects us to God.  We need God.  We must depend on God as our protector, healer, strength and friend.  We are a tree and God is the caretaker of the tree.  We will be blessed if we trust and hope in God.  That is our purpose.  That is how we are to be.  We must let God be God and care for us.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You care for us and protect us.  You are our life source.  I pray that we continue to stay close to You, Lord as we get through the pitfalls of life.  We know that You will get us through life.  We love You and need You always.

In Your name we pray,

Amen
