Proverbs 16:24, “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.”
Honey. A sweet product that be put on several other foods. Most people (unless they have an allergy) love honey. That is why honey is used to compare to pleasant words. They go hand in hand together.
Who doesn’t like pleasant words? Who doesn’t like the kind words at just the right time? With all the hate and judgment and mean comments, a pleasant word is like a sweet thing or a fresh drink of water. A pleasant word is not only kind but also makes God happy. A kind word is love. Love in a world full of hate.
Kindness is two-fold. It is good for the hearer and also the speaker. The hearer gets to hear something that they just might need or not hear enough. The speaker is also enriched in the kind words that are spoken. After speaking hate and mean things, how do we feel? Does it make us feel good or does it make us feel worse? In the moment it may feel good but the bitterness will overwhelm us and make us sick.
Our souls need kindness and love. Our very bones need this too. We all need love and kindness at the heart of the matter. This is because we are all created in God’s image. God is love and so it is natural that His creation would strive to want love. Look at all the media outlets and other material at everyone that is looking for love and kindness. In a world that wants to smear names and destroy credibility, isn’t it nice to know that we serve a God that is love and kindness?
Let us enjoy the honey of God. The sweetness that resonates on our lips. Let us speak kindness to our fellow-man. Let us not be filled with the bitterness that curdles our bodies and makes us feel sick. Let be filled with the sweet love of God. Let us fill others with that same sweetness. There is a reason that God sent His people to Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey (Leviticus 20:24). We need love. Why not give and receive the love that God is and has? Trust me when I say, this honey is sweeter than all the money in the world. It is the currency that leads a soul to Heaven. A land worth more than all the world.
I look at the world and I see hurt. I see pain. I see hate. People slurring other people. People treating each other poorly. No love for a fellow brother or sister. Even professing Christians are not immune to this. I pray that this world recovers. I pray that this world ,that is on life support, turns to You, Lord. I pray that we, including me, show more kindness to all. The world is in trouble but not more than You, Lord, can handle. Kindness heals the soul. Let our souls be healed and spread the healing.
In Your name we love and pray,
