Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, “To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted; A time to kill, And a time to heal; A time to break down, And a time to build up; A time to weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, And a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, And a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing; A time to gain, And a time to lose; A time to keep, And a time to throw away; A time to tear, And a time to sew; A time to keep silence, And a time to speak; A time to love, And a time to hate; A time of war, And a time of peace.”
A season. A short period of time in the eyes of God. As people, we have created 4 names for the seasons we have: fall, winter, summer, and spring. To God, a season is but a short time to pass. The beat of a heart. The blink of a eye. Time is a creation of man to be able tell when things happen. It is a recording device.
This is a passage usually heard mostly at funerals and some weddings. This passage is 8 verses of God showing us that everything that we do has a time allotted for it. Complete it and move on. We are not to linger in any one period of time. This passage is offered at funerals as a way to process loss and grief. God wants us to have a time to heal. After that, we are to move on and not dwell. As humans, we tend to dwell on the negative and forget the positive. For those who have lost someone, it sounds unusual to hear this as a gain. It is a gain as the soul is at peace for those who know the Lord.
Every day humans are born. Every day humans die. It is a cycle that has occurred since the beginning of time with Adam and Eve, when Cain killed Abel (the first recorded death). This is not a new concept to anyone. It is all in the plan of God for us to live and die. It was not always the case though. Before the fall, humans were intended to live on the Earth forever. After the fall, things changed. The fall was due to sin, separation from God.
You will see through the list that not everything that happens is listed. It is not necessary for them to all be listed. The point is this: God gives us time to do certain things at certain times in our life. Whatever it is in life, there is to be mediation in it. A middle ground. Not all or nothing. Plant and harvest. Gain and lose. Speak and be quiet.
Next time you go to do something, think about this: there is an appointed time to do all that is to be done. It is all in God’s timing and in God’s plan. We may feel like we are in control and that our plans are superseding God’s but we are only trying to fool ourselves. All that we do is predestined by God and nothing is outside of the sight of God. That is the blessing of serving an all-knowing God. That is how our God is. A time and a time until time is no more and all who know Him will live with Him forever in Heaven above. Oh, how glorious that will be! Heaven awaits! Come and follow God!
Thank You for time. A time for everything. Help us to enjoy all the time that we are blessed with and to praise You for all that You give us. We are not worthy of the breath and life that we have, yet You give us both. You give us family, friends, acquaintances, and others in our lives for a reason. I pray that all of us come to know You and know You better. I also pray that we all learn to appreciate all that we have from You. All is Yours and we give You all the praise, all the honor and all the glory that is owed to You for all that You are. Thank You for being our Father in Heaven and sending the Holy Spirit to be with us to guide us. Thank You also for sending Jesus to die for the eternal life that we can enjoy after our time on Earth is over. We are ever grateful for all that You give.
In Your time-giving name we pray,
