Matthew 5:1-12, “And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.'”
Blessed are the poor in spirit. Poor gives the image of not having any wealth. The in spirit portion makes sure to mention that this is not necessarily physical poorness but actually a spiritual poorness that is had. Someone who is poor in spirit is in constant need. The poor in spirit in this verse are actually poor in God. The people in this verse are a category of people who are in constant need of filling their spiritual tanks with the fuel that only God gives, similar to a vehicle that is reliant on gasoline or diesel. The vehicle cannot move with fuel and the poor in spirit also need God to move.
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Those who are poor in spirit receive a reward from God. That reward is the kingdom of Heaven. This does not mean that only the poor in spirit go to Heaven. This also does not mean that people who are rich in spirit cannot go to Heaven. This simply points out the fact that the poor in spirit are considered blessed because they will go to Heaven due to their reliance on God. The poor in spirit may have an easier time as they are in need of God on a daily basis rather than thinking that they can manage without God.
Are you poor in spirit? We should all aspire to be poor in spirit in the fact that we all need God daily, hourly, and even every second of the day. We need God. We need God so that we can go to the kingdom of Heaven for all eternity. By following God, we are daily admitting a need that we have. Let us need God daily and show God that we are His creation.
We need You. We always need You. You fill us with what we need when we need it. We lack nothing. I pray that all those who follow You will be daily refreshed by you. I pray also that all those who do not know You personally will come to know You and need You daily. You are a loving God. You are not a God that is distant or does not care. You are there for us. Thank You for always being there for us.
In Your name we always love and pray,
