Comfort and Edification

1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.”

Comfort.  Ease from pain, distress, grief or depression.  This is an instruction from God that is given to all to perform.  Everyone can comfort each other by listening and being there for each other.  Comfort can come from having been in a situation.  Comfort can simply come from being willing to be there with someone.

Edification.  Teaching to add intelligence and wisdom.  Everyone can learn and everyone can gain knowledge.  No matter your IQ, you can always learn.  No matter your IQ, God’s IQ is far higher.  People can teach other people and people can learn from each other.

There is a reason that these are put together.  While comforting, teaching can occur and in fact, teaching may bring comfort.  Teaching can be that reassurance that can calm an individual.  Teaching, done correctly, is direct but not hurtful.

Are you a comforter?  Then comfort someone today.  Are you a teacher?  Teach someone today?  If you can do both, do both.  Try blessing someone greatly today by comforting and teaching.  It is a win-win situation.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You are the true example of a teacher and comforter.  You have shown us love by stilling our souls.  I pray that this example You have given will be used by us.  People need comfort.  People need teaching.  I pray that those who can do either or both will step up and use their Godly gifts.  You are there for us and we should be there for others.  God, let us honor You in all that we do.

In Your name we pray,
