Hebrews 5:12-14, “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
When a human is born, he or she cannot eat food right away, but requires the milk from a mother or an artificial milk product. As the baby gets older, it can have mashed up food. Even older, they can chew and process tougher and tougher foods. This is the same for the person who progresses through their walk with Christ.
As a Christian is in the “infant” stage, they are just learning to eat. They need basic truths about the Bible and about Jesus. These will be the foundational messages that the Christian will build upon. Verses such as Romans 3:23, Romans 8:28, and even John 3:16 are great foundational verses for a Christian to learn and memorize.
In the “child” stage, the Christian begins to grow and can handle more and more about Jesus and the Word of God. This is the soft foods stage. They may try to learn everything they can and even read through the entire Bible, attempting to understand it all.
In the “adult” stage, they are learning more and trying to dig deeper into God and the Bible. This is the phase when the Christian gets to the real “meat” of the situation. This is comparable to the college level knowledge.
The last stage is the “mature adult” phase. This is the seasoned veteran. This is the point in which the Christian is the most knowledgable to God and the Word. This is the desired stage for all who are God’s people.
As a person travels through this path, it is important for the people in their lives to be good teachers. Those who are more mature should be teaching the people who are “younger” in their faith. This is how the church grows and this is how the kingdom of God grows.
Are you an infant, child, adult or mature adult? As you assess your stage, realize that as you grow, there are others who are less mature than you. These are the people that needs help to get to the level you are at. All of us should aspire to be mature adult Christians. Not all of us are there yet but with help, we will get to that point and be closer to God.
We want to draw closer to You. We want to learn more about You. We want You. As we grow, we know that You are our teacher and we should be a teacher as well. A teacher to those less mature as us. I pray that those who have knowledge share with those who do not. Everyone has gifts and those who can teach, should. Thank You for the example of Your Son, who went before us.
In Your name we pray,
