Deuteronomy 15:7-8, “If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs.”
Helping the poor. Seems like an easy concept and yet, so many people do not do it. The poor are often looked down on and judged. Instead, they should be shown compassion and love. These instructions were to the Israelite people who had left Egypt but can be applied to us today. We can help the poor.
Who are those in need? Those who cannot afford the basic needs: food, water, and housing. Who is your brother? Everyone. As Christians, the world is our extended family. Brothers and sisters. I can personally speak for myself in the fact that I have more than I need. I give to those in need because of the blessings that God has given me. This is not to be prideful or expect anything in return. This is simply to state a point: we can all help out others instead of hording our wealth.
If you look around, there are so many people who have far more money than they need or can ever spend in a lifetime. There are also people who are living paycheck to paycheck. There are also those who have nothing at all except the clothes on their backs. By giving to the poor, you are showing the love of God. This is also an excellent way to attend to another need: spiritual poorness. Jesus is a gift worth far more than money.
By giving the gift of Jesus, you are giving someone the gift of eternal life and a life with God the Father. You are leading them to the Savior of the world. When I give, I also give a tract to read about Jesus and ask if the person knows Jesus. This is an excellent way to spread the name of Jesus.
There are also organizations that assist the poor and needy. I do not endorse any nor will I in this blog. I will simply say that there are some and that once some homework is done, you can find the reputable ones to give to. This world is hurting and needs love. With a little money and Jesus, you can change a person’s life forever. You can win a soul to Christ.
Are you willing to give to those in need? I pray that you are. This world is only temporary and temporary needs are important. Let us not forget about the spiritual needs of our brothers and sisters in the world. These souls need Jesus. These souls need the gift of salvation.
Thank You for all the blessings that You shower on us daily. We have more than we deserve and we know that all we have is Yours. I pray that we use Your money to help out others in need. I pray that we also help spread the good news of You and Your Son who died on the cross to save the world from sin and damnation. We deserve Hell. We deserve punishment. We deserve separation from You. You do not desire this for us, though. You have saved us. You care. You love. Thank You with all our minds, bodies and souls.
In Your giving and glorious name we pray,
