Do The Word, Don’t Just Hear The Word

James 1:22-27, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.  For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.  But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.  If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.  Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

So many people want to talk and talk and talk.  Talking to hear themselves talk.  Talking to fill the air with noise.  Talking to incite a revolution or a riot or a protest or a following.  If you stand for a cause, stand for it wholeheartedly.  Whatever you do, though, make sure you know the facts before you join in and become a follower.

In the book of James, it says to be a “doer of the word.”  What does it mean to be a “doer?”  It means to do what you read and hear in the Bible, not just read of hear it.  It is the difference between hearing and listening.  A hearer hears the words in the Bible but does nothing with them.  A listener takes the information that they hear and apply it to their lives.  There has to be action to listen.  That has to be a “doing.”  Words without actions are useless.

What is the point of reading the Bible and hearing preachers preach if you won’t do anything with it?  What is the point of learning anything if you will just forget it?  Put the actions of the Bible into practice so that they are not forgotten.  It is about priorities.  What is important: the world or the Word?  What is important: people or the God of Heaven and Earth?

The Bible is the most important book in the world.  Without question.  The words that are contained in this book can change your very soul.  The words in this book can change everything.  You can read it over and over but if all it is is read, then there are better uses of your time.  God intended His word to be spread to all the people of the Earth.  God wants His Word to be understood by all.  Understood, not just read lightly like you are reading a fiction work.  Understood so that this book can be spread to others.  Understood so that this book can be preached to the nations of the world.

Help those who are less fortunate.  Help those in need.  God helped us when we were less fortunate and weak.  We are only strong though the blood of Jesus.  We are weak without the love of Christ.  We are weak without God.  With the world, we will remain corrupt.  With the world, we will fail and die.  Through Christ, we live.  Through Christ, we gain everything.  We lose the world but the world is not the end.  God is the answer.  God is all we need.

The tongue is a powerful thing.  It has the power to tear things down and put things up.  We can curse someone and bless someone with the same tongue.  We must wrangle our tongues.  We must control our tongues.  Without control, we will say things that are displeasing to God.  God wants us to use our tongues for good.  His good.  His perfect will for all.  Those who believe and those are yet to believe.  God is in control.  He always is and will always be in control.

So the question is: will you do or just hear?  Will you go out and spread the Word to your friends, family, and neighbors?  Will you sit on God’s Word and do nothing with it?  Will you try to hide the Word and keep it to yourself?  I find it unwise to do this.  Spread the Word.  Spread it to all.  God is needed in all the corners of the world.  God is the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings.  He is all in all.  He is the Light of the world.

Heavenly Father,

Help us to be more than just hearers.  Help us also to be doers.  Help us to be Your voice to a world that is hurting and need You.  You are the Light that is needed to shine in the darkness.  The world is a dark place.  The world is sad and depressed and mad and angry and confused.  Let us end this with you, Lord.  Let us be Your vessels to carry Your message to all who will receive.  We know that not all will want to listen.  I pray that You soften the hearts of those who need You most.  Help Your message to enter their hearts and they be saved by Your grace and salvation.  Your gift is free for the taking.  Help us to show people how to receive it.

In your name we pray,

Amen
