Sheep need a Shepherd

Matthew 18:10-14, “Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven.  For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.  ‘What do you think?  If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying?  And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.  Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.”

Sheep and Shepherd.  Similar to the branches and vine from yesterday, one cannot live without the other.  Sheep are completely helpless without a caretaker to guide them and protect them.  Jesus is our Great Caretaker.

Sheep are not known for being intelligent creatures.  They are very subject to becoming prey easily and need to be watched so that they do not get lost.  In this parable, one sheep actually does get lost and needs to be rescued by the Shepherd.  The other 99 sheep stay put, not going anywhere.  The other 99 listen to the Shepherd.  The one lost sheep needs to be nurtured and guided back to the flock.

Jesus cares for all us.  He cares for the the people who stay faithful to Him and also for the people that drift away.  Jesus does not want anything bad to happen to anyone.  This is why Jesus is always watching over His creation.  He is always there for His people no matter what.

God also has a plan for us.  He also cares for His Son and His creation.  When sheep get lost, they die.  When people stay away from God too long, they dieas well.  Spiritual death.  Do not stay away from God too long.  Your soul depends on it.  God does not want you to live without Him.  Choose God and stay with Him.  Don’t wander.  Don’t leave.  Stay firm in God.

Heavenly Father,

You are our Caretaker and our Friend.  You guide us away from harm.  We need You every hour of every day.  You are there for us through the good times and the bad times.  I pray that You continue to watch over Your flock.  You continue to care for us daily.  All that we need we get from You.  Keep us safe as we get up and lay down.  Thank You for being our God most of all.

In Your name we pray,
