John 15:1-8, “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. ‘I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.'”
Vinedresser, vine, and branches. God, Jesus, and humankind. The relation between God, Jesus, and human creation is shown in this passage of scripture. How each relate to the other is clearly shown in this account in the book of John.
God the Father: the vinedresser. The vinedresser would be the entity that would care for the grapevines. They would make sure that the vines and branches were cared for and producing fruit. God the Father is our vinedresser. He cares for us and makes sure that we are producing fruit. He even corrects (prunes) us so that we produce more fruit. He will also cut us off from Him if we are not following Him.
Jesus the Son: the vine. The vine is the main support for the branches that hold the fruit. The vine is very important to the health of the branches. Without the vine, the branches are nothing. The branches need the vine to survive. Without Jesus, we cannot survive. Jesus, by His life, death and resurrection, gives eternal life. Those without eternal life will die and be cast away from God.
Humankind: the branches. The branches are what hold the grapes and produce the fruit. The branches are all attached to the vine. The branches, though they hold the fruit, need the care from the vinedresser and the vine in order to exist. We need God the Father and His Son, Jesus in order to live. Without them, we die. We fail to exist.
God sent Jesus to Earth in the form of a man in order that we could relate more easily to Him. Jesus is the perfect example for us to live by and is always there for us. Just like the vine to the branches. The vine does not need the branches. The branches need the vine.
Thank You for being Our Vinedresser. Thank You also for sending us The Vine, Jesus. We are mere branches. We need You to care for us. We need You to guide us through life. We cannot live without You. You are our God and we are Your creation. Let us serve You more, love You more, and honor You more.
In Your name we pray,
