1 Corinthians 12:1-11, “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led.  Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.  There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.  There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.  And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.  But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.  But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”

Tongues.  This is a two-part gift.  The speaking of and the interpretation of tongues.  Let us first focus on the speaking of tongues.

The true act of speaking in tongues can be quite controversial and a lot of Christians actually want to steer clear of this topic.  Tongues refers to languages spoken that come from the Holy Spirit to be given a group of people.  This language may be a known language or may be completely foreign to the group.  Regardless, the gift of tongues is only effective with an interpretation.  Someone to speak and someone to relay the message.

The problem with tongues is that there are false teachers who would like people to believe that they can speak in tongues but are not gifted.  This gift is only from God and the Holy Spirit.  Satan and his demons would like people to completely avoid tongues and just be nervous about them.  This gift, though strange, is to be used.  The Holy Spirit guide the gifted in when to use it.

Tongues can be a tough gift to understand.  The key is this: God uses people to shed light on His plan through several languages, not just English.  Don’t avoid tongues.  It is best to embrace this as natural and of God.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of tongues.  There are times when our language is not enough.  We need to hear from You.  Directly from the Holy Spirit through a person with this gift to hear the words of You.
