Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”
Strong’s Concordance – egkrateia eng-krat’-i-ah; self-control (especially continence):–temperance
Self-control. Moderation. Temperance. All words that lead to a holding back from doing something. Examples could be drug use, alcohol abuse, or even over-eating. This can also refer to controlling one’s emotions. Self-control in biblical terms go beyond that.
Self-control is needed by a Christian to avoid sin and destruction. There is a fine line between following God and following the world. Jesus showed the ultimate example of following God during the time prior to His death. He could have killed all the people involved with His betrayal and trial. He could have taken Himself off the cross at any time. Jesus did not do that though. His self-control allowed Him to die on the cross without incident because He knew the full plan of God the Father.
Without self-control and moderation, a person will not stick to God’s plan. Even with partial self-control, following God all the time is impossible. Everyone will go off the rails and down rabbit holes that lead to destruction. An individual must completely submit to God’s will. This happens when a person gives their life to God fully.
God is a jealous God. I know this because the Bible says so. God will not share with the world when it comes to your soul. Self-control means controlling whom you serve. God or the world. Those are the options. No middle ground. No plan “C.”
Self-control from God teaches that the things of this world pass away, but God offers eternal life. Life without any more pain, tears, or death. This world can suck the life out of you. Just know that God loves you and God has a made a way for you. No one said that following God woud be easy. Just read the lives of Jesus’ disciples. Most ended in pain and suffering.
Choose self-control. The things of this world pale in comparison to the Almighty God. God is the Alpha and the Omega. The beginning and the end. A to Z. No time has God not been there. Choose God. It is a matter of self-control. It is a matter of moderation. It is a matter of life. Choose life. Choose life with God.
